Overcoming Challenges: How Humbercare Helped a Social Housing Resident in Grimsby Keep His Home and Beloved Pet

Published:

4/11/24

This case study highlights the journey of Mr. X, a resident of a social housing property in Grimsby, who faced significant challenges in maintaining his tenancy due to poor mobility and struggles with mental health. Humbercare's Learning Disability Service played a crucial role in supporting Mr. X, enabling him to make necessary improvements to his property and ultimately retain his tenancy, safeguarding his home and preserving his bond with his beloved pet.

Preserving Tenancy and Addressing Concerns

Following multiple complaints from neighbours regarding the condition of Mr. X's property, Humbercare's Learning Disability Service was engaged to intervene. With the risk of losing his tenancy and becoming homeless, including the potential separation from his cherished cat, Mr. X faced a critical situation.Despite initial hesitation, a collaborative plan was devised between Mr. X and his support workers, emphasising incremental improvements to his property. This involved learning new skills and managing finances to acquire essential items.Through persistent effort and unwavering encouragement, Mr. X diligently worked towards the goal of passing his tenancy inspection.

Success and Gratitude

ThroughMr. X's hard work and the guidance provided by Humbercare, he successfully achieved a passing grade in his tenancy inspection. The Housing officer expressed gratitude to Humbercare for their invaluable support in helping Mr. X preserve his tenancy. This outcome not only ensured the stability of his living situation but also allowed him to keep his beloved pet, which played a significant role in his emotional wellbeing.

Integration, Community Engagement, and Personal Growth

Mr.X's journey extends beyond the immediate housing challenges he faced.Previously, when he moved to a Humbercare property in Grimsby, he experienced feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. However, with the assistance of a dedicated housing officer and other support services, Mr. X successfully integrated into the community, attended crucial appointments, and found long-term accommodation. With ongoing support, he has acquired new skills, formed meaningful connections with others, and now feels a sense of confidence and security in his home.

Conclusion

Mr. X's experience exemplifies the profound impact of Humbercare's support in helping individuals overcome adversity and maintain stable housing situations. By addressing both physical and emotional needs, Humbercare empowered Mr. X to make tangible improvements to his living conditions, preserving his tenancy and allowing him to continue living with his cherished pet. This case study demonstrates the transformative power of compassionate and comprehensive support, enabling individuals to overcome challenges, find a sense of belonging within their community, and build a brighter future.

“I moved to a Humbercare property in Grimsby, not knowing anyone or the area at all. I was supported by a housing officer and another housing related support service through Humbercare. I didn’t go anywhere, and I was very anxious and depressed.
My workers made me feel at ease, supported me out in the community and helped me find things to do in the area. I was also supported to lots of appointments and making calls which I was always nervous to do.
After being in this property for a while and learning skills, I was supported to find long term accommodation. My worker continued to support me and helped me to set up a new tenancy. All the help I received has allowed me to feel confident in my property, I have learned new skills and become a member of the community I live in.  I have joined groups and made new friends and I really couldn’t have done this without the support.”
