VOLUNTEER ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ROLE

  1. To provide support to the individual as an impartial member of the community, who is independent of the Probation Service.
  2. To explain the role of the volunteer to the individual and to work within discussed boundaries.
  3. To work with the individual in a client centred way, basd on needs.
  4. To respect the person's opinions, feelings and lifestyle.
  5. To talk through options and alternatives.
  6. To befriend the individual, in a relationship of mutual respect.
  7. To show a non-judgemental and open minded approach.
  8. To be a good listener and show empathy with the individual's situation.
  9. To provide advice and information on practical issues such as preparing CV, job search, employment, training, leisure activities and everyday life skills.
  10. To keep the mentoring co-ordinator and probation officer informed regarding any problems encountered during activities with the offender.
  11. To offer encouragement and motivation to the individual you are supporting, to be realistic and help prepare the individual for his or her end of the probation order by talking through potential problems which they may be faced with.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. To attend regular supervision sessions with the mentoring co-ordinator to discuss your progress.
  2. To meet with the client's probation officer to discuss and exchange information within the boundaries and parameters agreed.
  3. To liase and feed back any relevant information to the mentoring co-ordinator or probation officer.
  4. To always be aware of your own personal safety and ensure the relevant people are aware of any concerns you may have.
  5. To adhere to the project confidentiality and reporting policies and to show commitment to equal opportunities.
  6. To complete all essential paperwork e.g. client meeting recird form, travel claim form and return them on a monthly basis to the mentoring co-ordinator.
  7. To attend mentoring group support/training meetings on a regular basis.
