The Humbercare Accommodation Scheme (Hull & East Riding) has been set up to meet the growing need to prepare young people in the area for adult life and equip them with the life and social skills necessary for independent living. All young people to the scheme are referred by Local Authority Departments and are assessed as young people at risk and in need.

The project recruits Accommodation Providers who can offer suitable, safe and well-supported accommodation for young people aged between 15 - 21, either on a short or long term basis. The Accommodation Providers receive on-going support from Humbercare workers, as well as a weekly allowance. Accommodation Providers can be as varied as the young people we place with them and a suitable match is always sought in order for a placement to be successful.

Young people referred to the scheme have a named social worker, who continues to offer them support for the duration of the placement. Humbercare staff also provide on-going support for the young person.

Recruitment

The Accommodation Scheme is strictly controlled and monitored. Each Accommodation Provider is vetted and in addition must agree to abide by Humbercare’s operational policies and procedure which cover areas of confidentiality, standards of accommodation provision and other issues relating to the care of young people.

History

The Accommodation Scheme was set up in Hull in 1994 and was originally a pilot for three years. Due to its success, funding was secured for a further 6 years. In 2001 the Scheme was introduced into the North East Lincolnshire Area and it is hoped that the project will see the same successes.
